The BASIC Exam assesses fundamental skills expected of first-year dermatology residents. Residents do not have to sit for nor pass the BASIC Exam. It is informational only and is not required for certification. First-year candidates receive an exam total percent correct score, percent correct score per each content area, and a percentile rank among their peers. The 4-hour BASIC Exam consists of approximately 200 multiple-choice items and is administered at the residency training programs.
