Carl V. Washington, MD, has been named President of the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) Board of Directors.
Dr. Washington is in private practice at Dermatology Associates of Georgia. His clinical expertise is in Mohs Surgery for the management of skin cancer, and the treatment of patients with melanoma and high-risk pigmented lesions. He joined Dermatology Associates of Georgia after spending 23 years on the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology. He is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor of Dermatology and a member of the Surgical Faculty for the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship Training Program. Dr. Washington is the past president of the Atlanta Association for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, and a past board member of the Atlanta Unit of the American Cancer Society. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Mohs Surgery.
The ABD Board comprises 16 volunteer dermatologists who each may serve three 3-year terms, one public member, one young diplomate observer (one 3-year term), and two directors-elect, who participate in discussions but do not vote during their first year.
The Board has elected two new members-elect:
Andrea Zaenglein, MD, is a professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the Penn State University School of Medicine and a pediatric dermatologist at the Penn State/Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital.
She has served on the ABD’s pediatric test item writing committee for six years.
Jerry Brewer, MD, is a professor of dermatology and is the fellowship program director of Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology in the Department of Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He has been a test item writer on the surgical dermatology committee for eight years.
Two previous directors-elect have started their first 3-year term:
Ryan Hick, MD, practices in Dallas, TX. He is certified by the ABD in general dermatology and in dermatopathology by the American Board of Pathology. He served on the ABD’s dermatopathology item writing committee for six years.
Mary Gail Mercurio, MD, is a professor of dermatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where she is the dermatology residency program director. She has served on the ABD’s in-training exam committee, on the surgical dermatology item writing committee, and on the general dermatology item writing committee.
The Board also selected M. Aileen Shinaman as the Board’s public member. Ms. Shinaman is Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the Medical College of Wisconsin. Until recently, she was Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Rochester.
The public member is a non-physician with health-related experience or knowledge in areas relevant to the Board. This member votes on Board matters but does not vote in new director elections. Ms. Shinaman was selected from candidates who responded to the ABD’s call for self-nominations. All ABD diplomates were asked to encourage qualified individuals to apply for this important position.
New directors, including a public representative, were elected in June.
