TO: ABD Diplomates
Like many of you, we were surprised and dismayed by the press release announcing the creation of the American Board of Dermatology Physician Assistants. This organization intends to administer an examination for the purpose of certifying physician assistants.
We want to be clear that the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) is in no way affiliated with the American Board of Dermatology Physician Assistants and opposes its creation.
We are concerned that this new organization will confuse patients as they look for information on dermatological care and/or seek a qualified provider. We also believe the organization’s name blurs the clarity of certification and what it means to be a board-certified dermatologist.
The ABD is currently working with its legal counsel and the American Academy of Dermatology to determine potential next steps. We intend to communicate with the organization, expressing our displeasure, opposition and possible actions.
We remain committed to protecting the value our diplomates and patients place on ABD certification. Your certificate reflects extensive education and rigorous dermatologic training that is unique to ABD board-certified dermatologists and ensures our patients receive the highest quality dermatological care.
