New qualifications for Laboratory Directors published in the Federal Register at the end of 2024 omitted physicians certified by the ABD. Until the most recent revision, ABD credentials were accepted criteria for the Laboratory Director position. The ABD has reached out to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, stressing that if these specialists are not allowed to serve as laboratory directors, their ability to care for patients will be severely restricted.

The ABD also is supporting efforts by the American Academy of Dermatology and other dermatology groups to once again include dermatology certifications in the accepted qualifications for Laboratory Director.
The ABD has reached out to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, objecting to new lab director qualifications that would seriously limit dermatologists' ability to care for patients.
