Meet the ABD Associate Executive Director, Continuing Certification
Stanley J. Miller, MD, MBA
Stanley J. Miller, M.D., M.B.A., has been in private practice in Towson, MD, since 2002. He is affiliated with the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. He also spent 10 years as a full-time faculty member at Johns Hopkins Hospital. His experience in both academic medicine and private practice has prepared him to lead the ABD’s continuing certification program. During the nine years he served on the ABD board of directors (plus two additional years as a CertLink consultant), he led the development of the CertLink platform.
A Pennsylvania native, Dr. Miller earned his medical degree at The Robert Larner, M.D., College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. He interned at St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, then spent a year as a research fellow in the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine’s dermatology department. He completed his dermatology residency at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. He was a Mohs and dermatologic surgery fellow in the University of Pennsylvania’s dermatology department.
Dr. Miller earned a master of science degree and a master of business administration, both in medical services management, from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Professional Studies in Business/Education.
While a full-time faculty member at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Miller was director of the division of dermatologic surgery. He was founder and director of the Johns Hopkins Melanoma & Cutaneous Oncology Group, and founder and chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Panel. He became an Assistant and then Associate Professor in the departments of Dermatology and of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
After starting his career in private practice in Maryland, Dr. Miller continued to teach in both the Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland dermatology departments.
Dr. Miller has authored more than 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 12 book chapters and monographs, and edited two textbooks. He also has served as a journal article reviewer for several journals, including American Journal of Pathology, Archives of Dermatology, and Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Fun Facts about Dr. Miller
Dr. Miller met his wife, Laurie, at the University of California at San Diego, although they are both from the east coast. She was a psychiatric nurse, and he was a dermatology resident. They have been happily married for 31 years.
The Millers were joined during the COVID-19 quarantine by their two grown daughters, Hollis and Parker, who were both able to work remotely from home.
Their large, close-knit extended family is a huge part of their lives.
The entire family loves New Orleans. They’ve been spending time there for the past 25 years.
Dr. Miller loves gardening, bicycling, and fly fishing.
He is passionate about Baltimore regional theater and served on the Board of Directors of Everyman Theatre for many years.
Having many interests run in the blood – his 87-year-old widowed mother, Ann Miller, takes classical guitar lessons, studies music theory, and walks for exercise every day.
